Chapter 4: The Warden's Ledger
Lucan Halcyr did not sleep, and at four in the morning he gave up and walked the harbor.
He did it most nights.
The Lord Warden of Saltmere kept three hundred guards, forty pilots and one lantern.
In six years he had never once found a reason to trust the dark.
Tonight the quay was empty except for the gulls and the tide sucking at the pilings.
He stopped at the customs house corner and put his hand on the wall.
The blue twine on his left wrist was damp with spray.
Aurelie had asked him that evening to speak to Perrine Valmorin again.
She had asked in the soft voice she used for everything, with her hands folded, her eyes lowered.
"I'm not angry," she had said. "She's not herself, Lucan. She was always so shy. I'm afraid she's frightened of something."
"I'll deal with it."
"Don't be hard on her. Please. Just let her know she can't treat poor Odile that way."
He had agreed.
He always agreed.
It was the closest thing to peace he'd had in six years, agreeing with her.
So why was he standing at the customs house corner at four in the morning with his teeth set?
"My lord."
The harbor sergeant had come out of the guard post, a stout grey man with a lantern.
"Sergeant."
"You've been walking, sir. I thought you'd want to know. We've a lady at the end of Hook Lane, on the stoop," the sergeant said.
"Which lady?"
"The Valmorin one, my lord. The baron's daughter. She's there most mornings this month, or she used to be," the sergeant said.
"At four?"
"With a sack of loaves." The sergeant rubbed his jaw. "She feeds the Tide children before the matron wakes. They line up at the back of the old rope store. Been going on since March, my lord. Eight, ten loaves. She pays the baker out of her own pin money."
Lucan looked at him.
"Since March."
