Chapter 19: Courting
Nobody moved.
Above them, Ivor's great head lowered until one gold eye was level with the trapper's face.
"Say it again," Ivor rumbled. "Slower. These men are going to remember it."
The trapper said it again.
The stableman made him say it a third time, and the four Hollow trackers stood around him in a ring and listened.
Six witnesses.
Six people who'd heard a tail-trader say Lucian Sandell was in that cave, and saw a white fox run out.
They walked home through the night with the trapper tied to the stableman's saddle and Prim riding in front of Linden, wrapped in Ivor's coat.
She fell asleep against Linden's chest halfway up the goat path.
They put the trapper in the cellar under the kitchen.
The cook put a bowl of porridge through the hatch in the door and said, "If you whine, you don't get honey."
He didn't whine.
Prim slept for two days.
When she woke, she was furious about the scarf.
"They put it in a snare," she said. "My scarf. My good scarf. I'm going to put an arrow in every one of those hook men."
