Chapter 9: What the Fire Wants

The flame lasted as long as a held breath.

Then it went out.

Ivor stumbled back from Linden so fast he knocked a ham off its hook.

The onions over Linden's head were on fire.

Ivor swore and slapped them out with his bare hand, and then stood there in the smoke, breathing hard, staring at his own palm.

"Ivor."

"Indigestion," Ivor said.

"That was fire."

"It was the sausages."

"You haven't breathed fire since the gate. You coughed ash at the forge. I saw you." Linden pushed off the shelves. "Then I touched you and your throat lit up like a lantern."

"Coincidence."

"You can't lie to me, remember? That's your rule, not mine."

Ivor looked at him.

His throat was still faintly gold under the skin, fading.

"I'm not lying," he said. "I'm refusing to talk about it."

He walked out of the larder.

Linden stood alone among the smoking onions with his hand still warm from Ivor's chest.

Then he went to the library.

He didn't know what he was looking for, but he knew whose books these were.

Half the shelves were law. The other half were the dragon queen's.

Dragon histories. Bestiaries. A recipe book for something called ember bread that needed a live dragon to bake it.

Linden found it near midnight.

It was a small book, bound in grey scale, handwritten in a big looping hand.

The dragon queen's own notebook.

Most of it was about weather and gold. Then, near the back, a page with a pressed flower in it.

A dragon's fire burns down over the years, she'd written.

It does not go out for want of food or rest.

It goes out for want of the one it answers to.

There is one, for each of us.

The fire knows them before the dragon does.
