Chapter 10: The Hunt Moon

The Hunt Moon rose over the ridge at nine, and the whole pack stood waiting for me to fail.

They had gathered in the long meadow above the pack house, three hundred wolves in jackets and boots.

Torches stood in the ground, and the elders sat on a bench at the edge of the grass.

The ledger had come back from the woodshop that afternoon, and the four widows had their wood.

That should have helped me.

Celia stood up anyway, in the same black dress.

"Section nine is the law," she said. "Tonight the Luna leads the Hunt. If she cannot, the council must name someone who can."

"I can run," I said.

"On two legs, dear?"

Someone laughed, low, and someone else shushed them.

Vanessa stood a few feet behind Celia in a pale dress with her arms folded.

Dane was next to her with his eyes on the grass.

I felt Ronan come to stand at my shoulder.

"You don't have to do this," he said quietly. "I can take the Hunt tonight. Nobody will say a word."

"They'll say it all winter."

"Then I'll make them say it to me."

"No."

I looked up at him.

His eyes were steady and dark, and I realized that for the first time I wasn't afraid of him seeing me fail.

"I want to try," I said.

"Then try."

He didn't touch me, but the mark warmed along my neck, and I understood that was his hand.

I walked to the center of the meadow, away from the torches.
