Chapter 46: The Burn

Ronan's POV

I had promised to stand still, and I had kept the promise through the whole fight.

It was the hardest thing I had ever done.

Now I was across the ring before the howling stopped.

She lay on the gravel in her white fur with her side open from the shoulder to the hip.

The wound was black at the edges.

I put my hands on her, and she shuddered once.

Her body shrank under my palms until it was Nora, bare and gray-lipped, lying on the stones.

"I can't stand," she said.

"I know."

"The run. The moon's up."

"I know. I've got you."

I pulled off my shirt and wrapped it round her, and I lifted her.

She weighed almost nothing.

Her head fell against my collarbone, and the silver burned me through the cloth where her wound touched my skin.

I didn't care.

"The ridge," she said.

"I'm taking you."

I heard footsteps behind me, and I knew them all.

Dane, and Tilly with Hazel, and the south sentry.

The eldest elder came on the baker's son's arm.

The old widow's cane went tap, tap, tap on the road.

The south dormitory fell in behind them, then the widows, then every wolf on that bank.

Nobody told them to.

We went up Creek Road in the moonlight, three hundred of us.

The fires Vanessa had stacked were burning at every post.

Every door stood open.

I saw lamps in the windows and shapes on the porches.

A woman stood holding a baby on her hip, with her face lifted to the road.

She looked at Nora in my arms and she nodded.

At the top of the road, by the pack hall steps, I laid her down on the grass.

"Healer," I said, in a voice I didn't recognize.
