I unclipped the badge from my blouse.
JANE. GUEST EXPERIENCE CONSULTANT.
I held it out to him, and he had to reach for it.
"Congratulations, Mr. Kinsella," I said, slow and flat. "Mind the revolving door. It's fixed now. You'll want to break it."
Ryland's smile slipped half an inch.
I walked down the mezzanine stairs before it came back.
Colm moved out of 2001 the next morning.
Two suitcases, one box of books and a coffee maker he'd bought in 2014 and refused to replace.
That was everything a hotel heir owned in New York.
"Where's the rest?" I asked, on the sidewalk.
"London."
"Where's the rest of the rest?"
"There isn't any." He looked surprised himself. "I've lived in hotels since I was eight."
He'd rented a one-bedroom on West 51st Street, four floors up, no elevator.
Apartment 4C.
I carried the box of books. He carried both suitcases and the coffee maker and still beat me up the stairs.
The apartment had one window, a radiator painted silver and a kitchen the size of a closet.
