Wrong Room: Sleeping With My Fiancé's Uncle novel · Chapter 4 of 32

Chapter 4: Back of House

I sat on the floor by the door with my sister until her breathing slowed.

Then I told her everything.

The wrong suite. Keely's laugh. The twenty. The uncle in his socks.

Dell listened with her mouth open.

When I finished, she was struck completely speechless, which is a family record.

"So you start tomorrow," she said. "As a stranger. In a hotel you're supposed to be inspecting."

"Basically."

"In the wig."

"In the wig."

She put her face in her hands and laughed until she cried again.

"I'm going to have to call you Jane at work," she said. "I'm going to mess it up. I'm going to call you Ro in front of the sous chef and we're both going to prison."

"You'll do fine."

"I've never done fine in my life."

At six the next morning I came in through the staff entrance on 58th Street with my badge clipped to the white blouse.

JANE. GUEST EXPERIENCE CONSULTANT.

My ring hung on a chain under the blouse. Jane didn't wear diamonds.

Down in back of house, word travels faster than the freight elevator.

By seven everybody knew the boss had hired a consultant from London.

And everybody knew what consultants are for.

The laundry room went silent when I walked in.

In the staff cafeteria, two room-service waiters picked up their trays and moved.

Dell walked past me at the coffee urn and said, "Morning, ma'am," in a voice like a hostage video.

I spent the morning on eleven.

The head housekeeper was a broad woman with gray hair pinned flat and thirty years of keys on her belt.

She watched me check a bathroom without a word.

Then she watched me check the linen cart.

"You're short on pillowcases," I said.

"We're short on everything."

"Since when?"
