Chapter 15: The Patrol Book

Idris's POV

The open door at the Tillery house had kept me awake until dawn, and I had nowhere to put it but my hands.

So I dragged my brother out to the lodge yard, because the girl was gone and the moon was eleven nights away.

My brother had not thrown a punch in six years.

I knew it by the way he stood in the lodge yard at dawn, with his feet too close together and his hands hanging open.

"Again," I said.

Cadell swung, slow and wide.

I stepped inside it and tapped him on the jaw.

"You're dead."

"I know I'm dead."

"Owain's been running the north ridge every morning since he was twenty-four."

"I know that, too."

"Then stop swinging like a man who wants to be hit."

He breathed out through his nose.

He was not looking at me.

He was looking at the porch, where the light was on in the kitchen and Nia was making coffee in her bathrobe, with a new cereal box on the counter behind her.

"You're happy," he said.

"Don't change the subject."

"I'm not." He wiped his face with his sleeve. "I'm glad. I wanted to say it before the moon, in case."

"In case what?"

"In case Owain calls the challenge anyway, whatever we prove, and I'm the one who gets taken out."

I hit him in the ribs, not gently.

He doubled over with a grunt.

"You're not dying, you idiot. Again."

We went another round.

By the fourth, he was moving his feet.

By the sixth, he caught my wrist and put me on the ground, and lay there laughing with his boot on my chest.

It was the first time I had heard him laugh since the barn.
