Chapter 5: Bond Fever

Idris got his brother upstairs and into bed, and I stood in the foyer and listened to the lodge settle.

Cadell was asleep within a minute, loud enough to hear through two walls.

Idris came back down alone.

He stopped on the bottom stair, and he looked at me.

"You're shaking," he said.

I was.

My skin was too tight, and my wolf was clawing at me from the inside.

The half-rejection had me by the spine.

"I can't be in the house," I said. "I need to run."

"Then run."

I went out the back door, across the dark yard, and I did not stop until I reached the trees.

I shifted at the edge of the creek, and it did not hurt, and it did not help.

Four legs, and the whole forest rushing into my nose and my ears.

I ran the creek bed to the old beaver pond, and back, and up the hill.

I was still burning.

Something big and dark came out of the pines behind me.

My wolf knew it before I did.

She stopped, and she turned, and she let him come.

He was a great brown wolf with amber eyes, and he stopped three body lengths away and lowered his head.

He did not come closer.

He had promised, and he was keeping it.

I walked up to him, and I shoved my nose under his jaw.

Then I shifted back, there on the cold creek bank, bare and shaking, with my hands in his fur.

He changed, and he was a man on his knees in front of me, as naked as I was.

His hands hung at his sides, open.

"Nia," he said, hoarse. "You said no touching."

"I know what I said."

"You said it until the moon."

"I know." I grabbed his face with both hands. "I'm burning, Idris. Make it stop."

"If I start, I won't be able to stop."

"Then don't stop."

He kissed me.
