Chapter 16: The Clause
"A year," the board chair said again through the phone. "Or the board votes to sell on November the first."
"Understood," Jarrett said.
"You don't sound surprised."
"Goodnight."
He ended the call and put the phone face down on the nightstand, and the dark came back thick.
I sat up with the quilt against my chest.
"You don't sound surprised," I said.
"No."
"How long?"
He lay on his back and looked at the ceiling.
"The lawyer's letter was in my jacket at the courthouse," he said. "I read it in the parking lot, before I walked in."
"Before you kissed me for the clerk."
"Yes."
I had written a line on a sheet of his printer paper so that nothing could ever be owed between us.
He had stood in a kitchen and signed beneath it with a year in his pocket.
"Why?" I said.
"If I'd told you, it would have been a trade."
"And now?"
"Now it's a lie."
He said it flatly, without defending himself.
That was worse than if he had tried.
