Chapter 9: Her Own Hand

Jarrett got me out of the ballroom by walking in front of me.

Nobody touched me, and nobody spoke.

In the truck I put my forehead against the cold glass and did not cry until we were past the river.

Then I did, all at once.

He pulled onto the shoulder and turned off the engine.

He didn't say it would be all right.

He put a hand on the back of my neck, and left it there, heavy and slow, until I could breathe.

"I wrote it," I said into my sleeve. "It's my hand."

"I saw."

"Tell me."

So I told him.

After the crash, the papers found out in an hour that I was Everett Hartsfield's only granddaughter, heir to the company that made the dam sensors.

They called me the orphan heiress.

A man in a gray coat stood on our lawn for nine days with a long lens.

My grandfather bought the house next door to put a wall between us and the road.

At thirteen the court changed my name to Calla Wray, my mother's name, and sealed the file.

"It worked," I said. "For six years nobody looked at me."

"And then he died."

"The year I turned nineteen. The trustees came to the funeral with a stack of papers."

"The lawyer asked if there was anything I wanted to protect."

I wiped my face with the cardigan.

"I wrote the letter on the hood of a car in the cemetery parking lot."

"I didn't think about it for one second. I wanted to never be looked at again by anyone."

Jarrett was quiet.
