Chapter 14: The Camera

By the next morning the story had a name, and the name was mine.

I dropped Eli at school myself.

I walked him to the door and told his teacher a man named Amos would pick him up.

Then I wrote the name on the pickup list in block capitals.

"Is Mr. Amos my grandpa?" Eli asked at the door.

"Who told you that?"

"Nobody. He cries at my jokes."

"Go learn something," I said, and kissed his cowlick.

Then I drove to Concord to get my tools.

Three vans were parked outside Tolland Restoration, one of them squarely across my bay door.

A man stood on my sidewalk holding a microphone and looking at the crack in my wall like it was evidence.

Six more people leaned on my fence with phones.

They saw my truck and came at me with cameras and questions.

"Ms. Tolland, is Cade Renfro the father?"
