Chapter 19: Brake Line

"Eli," I said, in my calmest voice. "Come out, bug. Right now."

"I'm not done."

"I know. Out."

"Mom, it's a race"

Cade reached the car in two long steps.

He lifted Eli out under the arms, light as a coat, and held him against his chest.

"Amos!" he called, and his voice cracked across the garage like a whip.

The old man was already coming from the kitchen with a plate of crackers.

He took one look at our faces and set the plate on a tool chest.

"Take him inside," Cade said. "Lock the door."

"You're squishing me," Eli said into his neck.

"Sorry, buddy."

"It's okay. You can squish me a little."

Cade's arms loosened by exactly one inch.

"Go on," he said, and his voice broke in the middle.

Amos took him away.

The door shut.

Cade turned back to me, white around the mouth.

"Say it," he said. "Say what that is."

I was already lying on my back on the concrete with a flashlight in my teeth.

I looked at the line.

It was a thin steel line, new, bent by my own hands on Tuesday, running from the master cylinder to the front left caliper.
