Chapter 20: Quiet Hands
The deputy copied the footage onto a drive, shook Amos's hand, and said the district attorney's office would hear it first thing in the morning.
Then he left, and the house felt like a held breath.
I put in a new brake line by ten, with the garage door shut and a flashlight clamped to the fender.
Cade stood at the bench and watched me bend it, and did not speak once.
I bled the last caliper, and the pedal came up hard and high under my foot.
My shoulders finally sagged with relief.
Eli was asleep in the guest room with Amos in a chair outside the door.
I came out of the garage wiping my hands, and found Cade in the yard.
He was standing in the dark by the old pickup with both fists open at his sides.
They were shaking.
I had never seen his hands shake.
Not at the folder, not at the hall, not when Eli asked him what to call him.
"I'm fine," he said.
"You're a terrible liar."
