Chapter 23: Kneel

Cade looked at the tent full of faces, and then he looked down at his own hands on the microphone.

"I'm not going to talk about Vivian," he said. "You saw."

Nobody moved.

"I'm going to talk about what I did."

I felt the whole tent lean in.

"Seven years ago I took a good woman to bed and didn't tell her I was engaged."

"She walked out of my motorhome humiliated, and I blamed everyone but me."

A woman in the second row put a hand to her mouth.

"This month I hired her to restore her own father's car and told her nothing."

"I tested her, and then I let a woman who had already lost enough think she had to protect herself from me."

"And I let my family's name do work for me that I was too much of a coward to do myself. I knew what Vivian was, and I took the comfort of not looking."

He let the silence stand.

"She lied. It was my fault she thought she had to."

He put the microphone back in its stand.

Then he came down the steps, across the grass, through the people, and stopped in front of me and my son.
