Chapter 22: The War Room
"I'm in the right building," Gilbert said. "I own thirty-one percent of it."
Braxton laughed, loud, for the room.
"Dad, you had surgery. You're confused. Somebody get the nurse."
Thirty heads were turned toward us over thirty screens, and not one of them was typing.
"Lift the hold," Gilbert said.
"What hold?"
"The one on the hundred and forty stores. The one you signed with his name."
"That's a system event," Braxton said smoothly. "A safeguard. Ledgerline 5 is working exactly as designed."
"I designed it," I said. "It doesn't have that safeguard."
He looked at me then, finally, and the smile went flat.
"Security," Braxton said.
Two men in black polos were already coming across the glass floor.
They slowed when they saw the chair.
One of them took his cap off.
"Mr. Hallett," he said, quietly, to Gilbert. "Sir."
