Chapter 14: The Offer
Lyman did not get out of the car.
He let the window hold him, and he spoke to all of us at once.
"Good morning," he said. "Forgive me for dropping by on a Sunday."
"Get off my street," Marty said.
"It's a public street, Mr. Pawlak. I'll be a moment."
He looked past Marty at me.
"Nick, I won't insult you with a speech. Come to the plant Tuesday at seven, for shift change."
"Why would I?"
"Because I'd like to show you something you'll want," Lyman said.
"And you'll want to see it in front of the people who watched me take it."
He rolled up the window, and the silver car slid away.
Cleo stood in the road with her hand over her mouth.
"Don't go," she said, quietly. "Nick, it's a setup."
"I know it is."
"Then why?"
I looked at the crew on the lawn.
"Because if I don't, he tells them I was too scared," I said.
On Tuesday morning at seven, I walked back onto the Garland floor through the same gate.
I wore my flannel and my work boots, and Marty and the crew walked behind me.
