Chapter 12: The Roof

The construction hoist carried Elise up thirty-one floors in the dark.

Nolan had gone up the stairwell an hour earlier and now waited behind a fire door.

Jodie and Margaret sat in a car at the bottom with the engine running.

The hoist stopped.

Wind came through the open steel frame.

The top floor of the Harbor Crown Tower was bare concrete, rebar and floodlights, with the city spread out around it.

Calvin stood alone near the edge in a long coat.

"You came," he said.

"You asked nicely," Elise said.

He gave a small, sad smile. It had worked on her once.

"Ellie, I made a terrible mistake. I let Selena get too close, and I lost sight of what mattered. I'm asking you to forgive me."

"That's why you called me to the roof?"

"I wanted somewhere quiet." He stepped toward her.

"I'll sign Selena off the project tonight. I'll put your name on the Tower alone."

"I'll send her and the baby away."

"You'll send away your own son."

His face changed for one second.

"He isn't my son. He's Nolan's."

"The lab says otherwise."

"Labs make mistakes." He lowered his voice. "Ellie, please. Come home. We'll have the party we should have had for June. A big one, with your mother invited."

Elise looked past him.

Beside the stairwell door, in the shadow of a stack of steel beams, a man stood with a phone raised.

It was not Nolan.

The man wore a dark windbreaker. He held the phone steady and kept the light off.
