Chapter 21: The Ring
Nolan signed the last page at his lawyer's long table on Monday morning, and the pen did not shake.
Five years ended in less than a minute.
"Your wife's counsel has already returned her copy," the lawyer said. "She signed without contesting anything."
"She would."
"Mr. Fairchild, I've seen a great many divorces. I've never seen one go this quietly."
"She has other things to deal with," Nolan said.
Calvin's text was one of them, and opening day was coming.
He had already sent the Tower's security chief Calvin's photograph.
He capped the pen and stood.
Selena was waiting in the corridor outside.
She wore a gray sweater he had never seen, with her hair tied back and no makeup.
An older man in a rumpled suit stood two steps behind her. Her new lawyer, a public defender, with a folder under his arm.
"I'm cooperating," Selena said, before Nolan could speak. "They gave me a deal. I give them the ledger and the passwords, and everything Cal ever told me, and I don't go to prison."
"That sounds fair."
"It sounds like what I'm worth to them." She tried to smile. "I have a bus ticket for Friday afternoon. I'm leaving the city."
"Where?"
"Somewhere that doesn't know my face." She looked at her hands. "I wanted to say it without anyone else around."
"Say what?"
"I'm sorry about the call. And the party, and the voice. I'm sorry about all of it."
"Tell Elise."
"I can't." Her voice cracked. "She'd look at me like I was nothing."
"She wouldn't," Nolan said. "She'd just look."
