Chapter 22: Under Her Name
The Harbor Crown Tower opened on Friday morning, under a hard blue sky.
Six hundred people filled the plaza in front of the glass doors.
A brass band stood at one side, and a red ribbon hung across the entrance.
Elise stood at the foot of the steps in a dark green suit that Jodie had chosen.
June was a week out of the hospital, pink and heavy and wide awake, and she lay against her mother's shoulder in a white knitted cap.
"You're shaking," Jodie said at her ear.
"I'm not."
"You are. I can see the baby bobbing."
"It's cold."
"It's sixty degrees, Lee."
Nolan stood a step behind them in a dark suit with no cap.
He did not touch her, because there were cameras.
His hand stayed an inch from the small of her back, and she felt its warmth through the wool.
The mayor reached the microphone.
"Today we open the finest building this city has seen in a generation," he said. "I'd like to thank everyone at Kenyon Development who made it possible."
Margaret Harrow, standing at the front of the crowd, gave a short, hoarse cough.
The mayor glanced at a card.
"And, of course, the board has asked me to name the woman whose design this is. Elise Harrow."
The applause was loud.
It went on and on.
Elise walked up the steps with June on her arm and took the oversized scissors from the mayor's hand.
"Before I cut this," she said into the microphone, "I want to say one thing."
The crowd settled.
"Seven years ago, I drew a tower on the back of a restaurant check."
