Chapter 6: Gate 23
The hearing was at nine on the morning of my flight.
Preston sat at the other table in a gray suit with his lawyer and his mother.
She looked at me once when I came in, then looked at the flag.
My lawyer was a woman my boss had found in a day.
Preston's lawyer talked for fifteen minutes.
He said "my client's child" repeatedly, leaning on every syllable.
He said I was emotionally unstable, as shown by a video seen by millions.
The judge was an older man with half-glasses. He read something on his desk the whole time.
When Preston's lawyer sat down, the judge looked up.
"Counsel," he said. "Is Ms. Garvin pregnant?"
"Yes, Your Honor."
"How far along?"
"Eleven weeks, Your Honor."
"So there is no child born."
"There will be, Your Honor."
"There will be," the judge agreed. "And when there is, Mr. Elstow can file for whatever he likes. Today he's asking me to tell a grown woman she can't take a job."
He took his glasses off.
"I've also seen the video, counsel. The whole world has. I'm not sure it shows what your client thinks it shows."
Preston's mother made a small noise.
"Motion denied," the judge said. "Have a safe flight, Ms. Garvin."
Out in the hall, Preston caught up to me by the elevators.
"This isn't over."
"It's over in this building."
"I'll see you at the airport," he said.
I thought he was being dramatic.
He wasn't.
My best friend drove me to Pittsburgh International at three with two suitcases and a carry-on full of crackers.
"Text me when you land," she said. "Text me if he's a creep. Text me if the British are rude."
"They're famous for not being rude."
"Text me anyway."
Preston was standing right inside the doors.
He had a man with him. Brown jacket, clipboard, bored face.
