Chapter 11: The Twin

I got dressed in a minute flat.

Jeans, a clean shirt, my hair twisted up with a pencil.

I crossed the courtyard so fast the fig leaves slapped my arm.

Through the kitchen door I could see Ronan at the stove with a sheet of biscuits, his back stiff.

He'd heard.

He looked at me through the pass and said nothing, but he took the pan off the heat and wiped his hands.

The dining room was full.

Sunday morning, every table taken, the regulars back for the hand pies.

The old man with the cane by the window.

Two couples from Ohio.

A family with three little girls in matching sundresses.

And Darren Kearney, sitting at the big round table in the middle with his feet up on a second chair.

His watch was on his left wrist.

He grinned when he saw me, and the chipped tooth showed.

"There she is. Mrs. Ashe." He drew it out. "Or is it still Mrs. Almost-Kearney?"

"Get your feet off the chair."

"I'm a paying guest."

"You're not a guest. There are no rooms."

"There's always a room for family." He looked around the dining room, making sure he had an audience. "Somebody's got to keep an eye on my brother's wife. Brandon's a wreck. Crying in the shower. Somebody should tell him what you're up to over here."

"I'm not his wife."

"You were supposed to be." He grinned. "He's not over it, by the way. He thinks you'll come crawling back once the innkeeper gets bored."

One of the women from Ohio put down her fork.

"And this place." Darren picked up a benne cookie from the basket on his table and turned it over. "Cute. Real cute. You know these are ours, right? The lawyers already told you."
