Chapter 24: The Order
Ronan sat up in the iron bed so fast the quilt slid off him.
I held up one finger.
"What kind of cake?" I asked the phone.
"The coconut," Brandon's mother said. "The seven-layer. For Sunday dinner. Brandon is flying home for a few days."
"We need two days' notice."
"Of course."
"And it has to be picked up at the counter. We don't deliver."
A pause.
"You used to deliver my pies," she said. "Warm. To South Battery. Every twenty-third of December."
"I did," I said. "For five years."
Another pause, longer.
"Thursday," she said. "I'll come myself."
The line clicked off.
Ronan lay back down and stared at the farmhouse ceiling.
"You going to poison it?"
"I'm going to toast the coconut," I said. "That's worse. She'll know what she missed."
