Chapter 23: The Sunday Table
The ladder was still against the Rosalind's hull.
I climbed it in my navy dress with my mother's pearls still on.
Kellen sat in the cockpit under the stars, with the tarp rolled back and a thermos beside him, his elbows on his knees.
He looked up.
He didn't stand.
"They took them both out in cuffs," I said. "The judge says the marriage never existed."
"Maisie texted me." His voice was rough. "Colleen is on the phone with the hospital. They're reinstating her in the morning."
"You left."
"You needed the room without me in it."
"I did," I said. "I also wanted you in it."
He nodded slowly.
"Then I got it wrong again," he said. "I'm going to keep getting some of it wrong, Cassidy."
I sat down on the bench across from him.
The night smelled of tar and creek water, and a long way off a halyard was ringing against a mast.
"Tell me all of it," I said. "I want the part you never said."
He took a breath.
"I was at the wedding."
I didn't move.
"I stood against the back wall of the ballroom in a borrowed waiter's jacket," he said. "My friend on the catering crew put me on the tray line for the toast."
"I told myself I was there to be sure of the face. I knew the face. I was there for you."
"You walked down the aisle in your mother's veil. You looked at him, and you were smiling."
"I had a letter in the jacket pocket. I thought: if I walk down that aisle right now, she'll hate me, and the whole room will see a stranger ruin the Barnwell wedding."
