Chapter 20: Handcuffs
Nobody in the ballroom made a sound.
On the tablet, the driver in the gray sedan looked straight into the camera.
It was Rob's face, with his mouth set, and his hands at ten and two.
"That's not me," Rob said.
The detective turned the tablet around so the front tables could see.
"The plate reads as the Garland Motors demo sedan registered to your company," he said. "A judge signed a warrant for that car at six o'clock tonight, Mr. Garland. It came through while your guests were eating dinner."
"That's not me," Rob said again, to nobody.
"We found the car in a hospital garage with a Garland Motors plate frame and blue wool in the bumper." The detective's voice was calm and tired. "Your prints are on the wheel."
Rob said nothing.
"Mr. Ferren's photographs and the recording from the garage are already in the file," the detective said. "Add what you just told three hundred people."
He nodded at the officers.
They came up the ramp together.
Rob looked at them and then at the doors at the back of the room.
I saw him think about it.
I saw him gather his legs.
Then he looked at the forty-foot screen above him, where the frozen face of the driver still hung over the ballroom, and he did not run.
"Robert Garland," the first officer said. "Put your hands behind your back."
"Dad."
"Say nothing," Bert said.
"Dad, do something."
Bert did not look at him.
Bert was looking at the exits, and he did not move.
The officer took Rob's wrist, turned him, and the cuffs closed with a small flat click.
It was a very small sound.
It carried into every corner of that room.
