Chapter 14: Too Scared to Hold Him

"Go," I said to June. "Go, go, go."

"He told me to stay with you."

"He's not the one whose son is down that hall."

She looked at the obstetrician, who was bent over my stomach with a needle and a very calm face.

"Go," the obstetrician said. "I'm not done, and she isn't going anywhere."

June ran.

It took another twenty minutes to close me up, and I lay there with my hands clenched on the sheet, feeling nothing below my ribs.

The obstetrician talked the whole time about her daughter's science fair project.

I understood that she was doing it on purpose, and I loved her for it.

When she finally stripped off her gloves, I said, "I want to see my son."

"You'll see him in recovery."

"I want to see him now. Please take me to the nursery."

"Millicent, you can't walk."

"Then wheel me."

She studied my face.

Then she said, "Fine," and unlocked the brakes on the bed herself.

The corridor was bright and almost empty.

At the far end, past a pair of glass doors, I could see the nursery window and a knot of people in front of it.

Two guards were there, and a nurse with her arms crossed, and Dillon, with his back to me.

June stood beside him.

And in front of them all, in a pair of pale green scrubs two sizes too big, stood Kendall.

She had her hair tucked up under a surgical cap.

There was a paper band on her wrist, and she held it out to Dillon.

"I'm on the family list," she said. "Brett's mother signed me in at the desk. I'm his aunt."

"Mrs. Rigby's signature doesn't make you anything," Dillon said.

"Scan it."

"I'm going to."

He took her wrist and ran the scanner over the band.

It gave a flat red beep.
