Chapter 22: Six Weeks

Brett reached for Theo in front of the employees after calling me unfit.

One employee stepped between us and blocked his hand.

Theo began crying against my shoulder.

Brett's fingers stopped inches from the employee's chest.

The man planted his feet and held his ground.

'Back away from them,' he told Brett.

Brett stared at the man who had once worked for him.

'You should remember who paid your salary.'

His voice carried across the hall.

The employees heard him try to order them around after he had lost his position.

No one moved to help him reach us.

Theo cried harder, and I pressed his head against my shoulder.

I kept my hand on his back and looked at Brett over the employee's shoulder.

He had called me unfit, then reached for our son when I refused to agree.

I wanted him to look at Theo and hear what his voice had done.

Instead, I held my son close while the employees watched Brett stand there.

Brett's mother stood from her chair.

'I will attend the custody hearing,' she said. 'I will hear Tessa's account.'

Brett turned toward her.

She stayed on her feet, with the space between their chairs still open.

He looked at the employee who had blocked him, then at the others.

'You all know what she's like. You worked for me.'

The man did not step aside.

'I heard what you called her,' he said. 'I saw you reach for Theo.'
