Chapter 4: Too Anxious to Sign

Brett got to me in six long steps with the roses held out in front of him.

"Millie. Thank God."

He crouched beside my chair so that his face was level with my belly, and everyone at the desk could see him do it.

"I've been calling you since five. I thought something happened. I checked every hospital."

"You didn't check this one," I said.

"I didn't know you'd come here alone."

I wasn't alone. June stood on my other side with her arms folded.

Brett looked up at her and gave her his polite smile.

"June. I'm so glad she's with family. She's been having a rough few weeks."

"Has she," June said.

"She left in the middle of the night. No note. Mom and I were frantic."

His mother stepped forward and put a hand on his shoulder.

She is a small, upright woman who wears pearls to the grocery store.

I had always been a little afraid of her.

"Millicent, dear," she said. "Nobody is angry. We only want you home where you're safe."

Behind her, a pregnant woman in the waiting area had stopped scrolling her phone.

Two nurses at the desk were pretending to chart.

Dillon had gone very still next to the laptop.

"I'm safe," I said. "I'm sitting in a hospital."

"You're overwrought, darling." His mother opened the envelope and drew out a single page. "A doctor who has known our family for thirty years saw Brett this morning and has written down his concern."

I did not know any such doctor.

She held the page out to Dillon, and when he didn't take it, she held it toward the room.

"It says Millicent has an anxiety disorder that is impairing her judgment. It says she shouldn't be making medical decisions alone."
