Chapter 6: Family Dinner
The invitation came by text at four o'clock.
"Sunday dinner, six sharp. Only family. Let's talk like adults. Love, Mom H."
I read it aloud on June's couch, and June took the phone out of my hand.
"No."
"It's my husband's parents."
"It's his mother, who stood in a waiting room yesterday and called you unstable."
"She also sat down in a plastic chair next to a stranger and folded the note into quarters."
"So?"
"So she didn't know. I think she believed him."
June looked at me for a while.
"If you go, I go."
"You'll hate it."
"I'll hate it in a chair next to you."
We took her car, with the quilt folded in the back seat in case I wanted it.
Brett's parents live in a brick house with white columns and a lawn that someone cuts on a schedule.
His mother opened the door in a cream cardigan and a fresh coat of lipstick.
She looked at June, and she looked at my belly, and she stepped aside without a word.
The dining table was set for five.
Brett stood up when we came in and pulled out my chair, and I let him, because June was watching and I had decided to let him think everything was normal.
His father sat at the head of the table with a glass of water.
He is a tall, silent man who has run the same company for thirty years and has never raised his voice in front of me.
He nodded at me once.
I nodded back.
The roast came and went, and nobody mentioned the hospital.
His mother asked me whether I was sleeping, and I said I was sleeping fine.
She asked whether I was eating enough, and June said, "She ate a whole bowl of dry cereal on Friday."
Nobody laughed.
When the plates were cleared, his mother folded her hands on the tablecloth.
