Chapter 10: Four Months

Conroy's POV

I stood outside the print shop for ten minutes after she left, and then I got in my truck and drove to Colin.

It was after eight, and the showroom lights were off.

He was in the back office with his feet on the desk and a bottle of bourbon open beside the phone.

He didn't get up.

"Look who it is," Colin said. "My best man."

"I'm not your best man."

"You're on the seating chart."

"Take me off it."

He laughed and poured two glasses, and I didn't take mine.

Six years as his partner, and I had thought he was a weak man and not a cruel one.

"You sent the cards to Della's house," Colin said, turning his glass. "I figured it out Friday, when the stationer called to ask if I'd received my copies. I didn't receive any copies. You went around me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she was going to stand in a pavilion on Saturday and find out in front of five hundred people."

"That was the idea."

I had known it, and it was still different to hear him say it.

"That was the idea," Colin said again, softly. "Mom and I talked it through. If Della showed up, there'd be a scene. She'd cry and make a fuss and ruin the day for Lacey. But if she's at the spa, getting a treat from her new family, and her phone gets lost in the car, and her ride comes back late, by four o'clock it's over. A done deal. A baby with a name. And Della finds out after, with nothing to fight."
