Chapter 5: Nonrefundable

The coordinator didn't speak for a moment.

When she did, her voice had gone from warm to careful.

"Okay. Before I process that, I want to make sure you understand what a cancellation means."

I held the edge of the dining table.

"Go ahead."

"Your first deposit was sixty-two hundred dollars. It's nonrefundable. Today's installment won't be charged, but once I release the date, another couple can book it. We might not be able to give it back to you."

Sixty-two hundred dollars.

That was four months of my rent, and the number should have stopped me.

It didn't.

"Would you like to talk to Preston first?" she asked.

"I already did."

"And you're sure."

"I'm sure."

"Then I'll need to ask one more thing," she said. "The deposit came from a card ending in 4417, which belongs to something called the Koehler Family Trust. Is that Preston's family?"

"His grandmother's, I think."

I had never asked.

Preston said his grandmother wanted to pay for the venue as her wedding gift, and I had said thank you and moved on to flowers.

"I see," the coordinator said. "Then I'm legally able to cancel on your authority alone, as the other contact. But I'd like to flag it, in case the family has questions."

"They'll have questions."
