Chapter 6: The Spare Key
The apartment was exactly as I had left it on Wednesday, which made it worse.
My parents' flight had landed at nine on Sunday night, and my mother walked in ahead of me with her purse still on her arm.
She set it on the dining table beside the invitations.
"Where do you want to start?" she asked.
"The bathroom."
I don't know why I said it.
I opened the cabinet under the sink and found a second toothbrush in a cup I had never bought.
It was pink, and it was a little worn.
Behind it stood a bottle of the face wash Lila used, and a hair clip with strands of blonde caught in it.
My mother looked over my shoulder.
"She stayed here?" she asked.
"She stayed when I was on night shifts at the clinic." My voice sounded flat to me. "Devin said she slept on the couch because she lived forty minutes away."
"And you believed him."
"I wanted to."
I opened the bedroom closet.
On the left, behind my winter coats, hung a gray silk robe I had never seen.
Inside the collar, Lila's initials were written in marker.
On the shelf above, in a shoebox, were three spare keys on a ring.
One of them had a strip of tape across the top with a single letter on it.

"She has a key," my mother said.
"She's had one for two years."
"Did you give it to her?"
"No." I sat down on the edge of the bed. "Devin said she needed it for emergencies."
My mother sat beside me and said nothing for a long time.
