Chapter 11: The Lamp
She came back the next night without being sent for.
I was sitting up in the chair beside the lamp with a ledger I was not reading when the door opened.
"You didn't knock," I said.
"It's your room. You can throw me out."
I did not throw her out.
She crossed the floor in her nightdress, with the grey coat over it, and sat on the edge of the bed with her hands in her lap.
For a while neither of us said anything.
"There was blood on the sheet," I said.
"An old cut. It opens sometimes."
"Where?"
"It's nothing, Dav."
It was the same flat voice she had used in the hall when her brother asked what she had done on the night she left.
I let it go, because I wanted her more than I wanted the answer.
I went to her and knelt on the floor between her knees.
She looked down at me with her hair loose around her face.
"Is this the part where you start hating me again?" she asked.
"Not yet."
I put my mouth to the inside of her knee, and then higher, and she shuddered with a soft gasp.
This time I was slower.
I took every piece of clothing off her except the left sleeve and laid her back across the pillows, and I kissed her until she was soft and heavy and reaching for me.
She touched the scar through my eyebrow with one fingertip.
"Who did this?" she asked.
"Your father's buckle."
Her hand went still.
"I didn't know that," Lenore said quietly.
"No."
She drew me down and kissed the scar, very gently, and something in my chest turned over.
