Chapter 22: Sonya at the Table

Sonya's apartment had one table, four chairs that did not match, and a lasagna the size of a suitcase.

She had put on an apron that said Nurses Do It On Nights.

Kenneth had asked her to take it off, and she had refused.

"Sit," she said to Annabel. "Not there. That chair wobbles. Sit in the good one."

Annabel sat in the good one.

She had worn jeans and a gray sweater, because Sonya had told her to come in ordinary clothes.

She plainly had no idea what ordinary clothes were.

Sonya cut a square of lasagna the size of a brick and put it on her plate.

"Eat," she said. "While you eat, I'm going to ask you questions. You have to answer all of them."

"All right."

"Question one. When you were ordering the desk, to ruin him, was the desk supposed to be bad?"

Kenneth put his fork down.

"Sonya."

"I'm asking."

"I wanted the best desk in the city," Annabel said.

"I'd planned to find out what he was proud of and take it."

"And?"

"He made me a chair for it, and I couldn't."

"Hm," said Sonya, writing nothing down.

"Question two. The photo of you at twenty-seven in the ring. Did you know Sheldon had it?"

"No. I thought I'd burned them all."

"Question three. The bathrobe."

"The bathrobe was his idea," Annabel said. "I had nothing to do with the bathrobe."

Kenneth laughed, one loud surprised bark, and put a hand over his mouth.

Sonya looked at him, and her face softened for a second, and then it set again.
