Chapter 5: The Suit
"Hold still," Sonya said around a mouthful of pins.
Kenneth stood on a milk crate in the middle of the workshop in a rented tuxedo jacket that was an inch too short in the sleeves.
It was Tuesday, and she had come straight from her shift to make him presentable.
"I look like a waiter," he said.
"You look like a waiter at a good restaurant. Arms up."
He raised his arms.
She tugged the cuff down and frowned at it.
"Okay. Terms. Say them to me exactly, because I'm going to hold you to them."
"In public I'm her husband. In private she's nobody's. Nothing after the gala."
"And then?"
"Then she tells me everything."
"Everything, or everything she can?"
"She said everything."
"Mm." Sonya took out a pin and put in another. "A woman who says everything after the party is a woman who thinks the party will go well."
"Or she doesn't plan to be alive for the sequel."
"Don't be dramatic, you're getting sawdust on the rental."
He looked down.
He was.
"What does 'in every way visible' cover?" Sonya asked.
"Hands. Standing close. Probably a kiss."
"Probably a kiss." She sat back on her heels. "Ken. Do you want to?"
He opened his mouth to say no.
The answer that came out was, "I don't know."
"That's the first honest thing you've said all week."
"I'm still angry."
"Obviously. You can be angry and want to kiss your wife. Those are two separate drawers." She stood up and brushed her knees. "Just don't let her tell you which drawer to open."
At noon, he drove to the Wexford Tower.
She had asked him to come by, so he could walk the route before Friday.
