Chapter 12: Not Pretending Anymore

By nine the next morning the post had two hundred thousand views.

Strangers had written under it.

Some of them wrote that I was a gold digger who'd drugged myself for a billionaire.

Others wrote worse.

Evan read every comment standing at the window of the suite with his jaw locked.

Then he put the phone face down on the desk.

"Margaret's called an emergency board meeting," he said. "Ten o'clock."

"I'm coming."

"You don't have to."

"I wasn't asking."

I put on the green dress again because it was the only thing that made me feel like I could stand up straight.

The head of security met us at the elevator with a tablet in her arms and a folded printout.

"Mr. Brodsky." She hesitated. "There's something else."

"Go on."

"A cab?"

"A private car, with a plate registered to Kroll Restaurant Supply."

My stomach tilted.

"Bree told me she put me in a cab," I said.

The head of security looked at me.

"There was no cab at the club's corner that night, miss. I checked the street cameras."

Nobody said anything.

"Later," Evan said, quietly, and put his hand at the small of my back.

It was a public touch, and it was warm, and I leaned into it.
