Chapter 13: Alpha Eskildsen at the Gate

We dressed in the dark, fast and badly.

I had my shirt on inside out. Roark had hay in his hair and one boot on the wrong foot.

The horn sounded a third time, close enough to rattle the loft boards.

"He said three days," I said.

"He said it so I'd stop watching the road."

"Then you lied to him, and he lied to you. Is that how Ironwood does family?"

"That is how it does everything." Roark grabbed my wrist at the top of the ladder. "Winona. Listen. Whatever he asks you, don't answer him. Look at me and I'll answer."

"No."

"Winona."

"Don't lie for me again. You've done it twice, and it's going to cost you."

His jaw tightened.

"Three days you let me think you were a plain wolf," he said. "Three days, while I was falling over myself, and I'd have given you anything you asked for. Don't tell me what a lie costs me."

I opened my mouth, and nothing came out.

"I'm not saying it to hurt you," he said, quieter. "I'm saying it because I've been carrying it, and I'm done carrying it. I know why you did it. I'd have done the same. But it stung."

"I was afraid you'd draw the knife."

"I know." He let go of my wrist and touched my face instead. "I'm not drawing it. Now come on."

Teddy was already standing in the barn door, shirtless, holding a pitchfork upside down.
