Chapter 26: The Gathering

Winona's POV

We drove to Moon Rise in six trucks, and nobody sat in the third one.

Callie rode with me and held my hand the whole way.

Grandpa rode up front with Nana Bess, in the suit he had last worn to a funeral.

I looked out at the same lawn where I had bled.

They had set chairs on it in rows, and a long table stood at the far end under a canopy.

Three hundred wolves were already inside the hall, and I could hear them through the doors.

Two men in Ironwood gray stood on the porch with rifles slung. One of them was a heavy man near forty.

He saw Roark get out of the lead truck, and his hand moved on his strap.

"Evening," Roark said.

"Heir." The hunter cleared his throat. "Alpha's orders. Invited packs only."

"We're invited," I said.

"Name?"

"Hargrove."

He looked at his list. "Blue Crescent's on here. Moon Rise's on here."

"I'm Moon Rise's guest."

The porch door swung open.

Dale came out in his dark suit with the Moon Rise Alpha's pin on his lapel.

"She is my guest," he said. "So are the other forty people in those trucks."

"Anyone who wants to keep them out can stand in front of me and say so."

The hunter looked at the forty people behind me, and then at the empty porch beyond Dale.

He stepped aside.

"Thank you," Dale said, pleasantly. "Don't go far. You'll want to hear this."
