Chapter 4: The Bag Was Already Packed
I did not sleep, and at five in the morning somebody knocked on my window with a spatula.
It was Callie Prater, the cook's daughter and my best friend since we were six, standing on the porch roof in her apron.
I opened the window.
"You are going to fall," I whispered.
"I've fallen off this roof four times and I'm fine." She climbed in with a tray. "I brought pancakes and gossip. Pancakes first."
I ate one standing up.
"The whole kitchen heard about dinner," she said. "The older twins told everyone you turned into a bear."
"I didn't turn into anything."
"Your eyes went gold and you broke a chair. I'm just saying, that's a bear's work."
I laughed, and then I stopped, because she wasn't smiling.
"Winona, your dad has been on the phone since midnight. I took coffee up to the study. He told whoever it was that you had to be out of here before the weekend."
The pancake went dry in my mouth.
"Out of where?"
"Here."
Before I could ask her anything else, the bedroom door opened without a knock.
Mom stood there with a gray duffel bag in one hand and an envelope in the other.
She smiled at Callie and then at me.
"Good, you're up. I have wonderful news, sweetheart."
"I doubt that," Callie said under her breath.
Mom set the duffel on my bed.
"We thought you needed a rest after all that excitement. Somewhere quiet where you can heal. Your father has arranged a lovely visit with some family friends in the mountains."
