Chapter 22: Certificates
The last class of the term was the following Tuesday, and it started on time for the first time all winter.
Eight of us sat at the long table in Meeting Room 2 with our coats off.
The kettle was boiled.
Winona had brought a Thermos and, for once, two.
At eleven sharp, Anselm stood under the lamp wall in his gray vest with both cuffs buttoned.
He had a manila folder on the desk beside him.
"Tonight there's no lesson," he said. "I have a visitor."
The door opened, and Duane Pettibone came in, in the beige raincoat, with a cardboard box.
He did not carry a clipboard.
I almost didn't recognize him.
"Good evening," Duane said. "I'm told this is the part where I read names."
He set the box on the table and took off its lid.
Inside lay eight cream-colored certificates, each with a gold county seal and a ribbon.
"This has been a good class," he said. "I have reviewed the instructor's records and the practical of each student."
Winona sniffed, and looked at the ceiling.
"I will read them in the order the clerk gave me," Duane said.
