Chapter 11: The Video
"Where is he?" I asked. "The roommate."
Sigrid blinked at me.
"He sells cars," she said. "His dad's place in Superior. The one with the giant inflatable gorilla."
Then she put her head down on our table and closed her eyes.
Kat called her a cab and paid for it.
"I hate that I feel bad for her," Kat said on the sidewalk.
"Me too."
The dealership opened at nine.
The inflatable gorilla was on the roof, and the roommate was at a desk inside in a too-big tie, eating a doughnut.
He recognized me before I said a word.
The doughnut stopped halfway to his mouth.
"No," he said. "Whatever this is, no."
"I just want to see it."
"I don't have it."
"Sigrid says he paid you five thousand dollars."
He looked over his shoulder at the glass office where an older man was on the phone.
"Keep your voice down." He leaned in. "His family's bank holds my dad's loan on every car on this lot. You get that? Every car."
"I won't say your name," I said. "Not to anyone. Not ever. You can delete my number after."
He stared at his doughnut.
"I deleted it off my phone," he said finally. "He watched me do it."
"And?"
"And I didn't delete it off the cloud." He swallowed. "I'm not stupid. He's not a nice guy."
He took out his phone, typed for a long time, and turned the screen toward me.
It was dark and shaky, lit by a phone flashlight.
There was laughing.
Out on the ice, very small, was a girl in a puffy jacket walking toward a red hull, her red hair loose.
"I'm touching it!" she shouted, and slapped the steel.
It was my voice.
Then the crack, like a gunshot.
The scream.
The camera swung wildly, and Prescott ran right through the frame toward shore, his face white, past the camera, gone.
"Dude!" the roommate's voice yelled after him. "Dude, she's in the water!"
