Chapter 10: Ten Years of Colfax Strength

Nolan drove to Mercy Hospital with one hand on the wheel and the other holding mine.

He didn't say a single word about speed limits.

The emergency room lobby was full of people who were already having the worst night of their year.

Trevor had made it worse.

He stood at the front desk in his gym jacket, tall and handsome and loud.

"I'm her husband," he was telling the clerk. "She's sick, and she won't tell anybody. I have a right to see her chart."

Behind the desk, Sonya stood with her arms crossed and her badge flipped around.

"Sir, you don't have a right to anything in this building," she said. "Sit down or leave."

A security guard was drifting closer along the wall.

Every head in the waiting room had turned.

A woman holding a toddler had pulled the child's face against her shoulder.

"Trevor," I said.

He spun around.

His whole face changed.

Worry, tenderness, a little hurt.

"Jo. Thank God. Baby, you left your medication at the house, and I've been out of my mind."

"I don't take any medication."

"The vitamins. You know." He smiled at the room, an apologetic husband. "She doesn't take care of herself."

Then he saw Nolan behind me.

He looked at my hair and at Nolan's collar, and I watched him do the math.

"Right," he said, very softly, and the smile stayed exactly where it was.

I walked to the desk.

"I'd like to put a note on my file," I said to the clerk.

"Certainly, ma'am."

"No information, results or paperwork goes to Trevor Colfax. Not now, not ever. Not even if he says he's my husband."
