Chapter 18: The Check

Sonya held the cashier's check up to the kitchen light.

"It's real," she said. "It's a lot of zeroes. Cash it."

"No."

"Jo, it's Dad's money."

"It's Dad's money in an envelope that says Come home."

I put the check on my kitchen table next to the sticky note and my phone.

"If I cash it, he calls it a loan he paid back, and he says we had a misunderstanding. If I keep it, it's the only paper in the world where Trevor admits it was mine."

Sonya looked at the check for a long moment.

"You're scarier than you used to be," she said.

"Thank you."

"I mean it as a compliment. I'd follow you into a fire now. Or a bank."

The doorbell rang.

A courier stood on the stoop with a long white box and a card in thick cream paper.

I knew the handwriting before I read it.

"Wear this," the card said. "A widow's color, and it makes a point. Bring the shoes you can run in. R.D."

Sonya lifted the lid.

Inside, folded in tissue, was a black velvet gown with a low, square back.

It was Martha's own dress from thirty years ago, cut down by someone with a very steady hand.

I held it up against myself in the hall mirror.

"Okay," Sonya said, very quietly. "That's the one."

We laid it across the table, on top of the lease and the bank slips and the photographs from the drawer.
