Chapter 11: The Quarry

The quarry road climbed out of the city through dry brush and cut stone.

Rafe drove, and Kerensa watched the guardrail go by.

Neither of them said anything.

After the last house, the asphalt narrowed to one lane, and a rusted gate stood open across it.

He stopped the truck beside it.

"This is where Ward waited," Kerensa said.

"Yes."

"How far is the drop?"

"Walk with me."

They went up the last stretch on foot.

The wind came hard across the open rock.

At the top, the road made one sharp bend around the lip of the quarry, with a low steel rail along the edge.

The rail was bent.

Someone had tried to straighten it and had not finished.

Kerensa walked to the bend and looked over.

It was a long way down.

Pale stone, a flat pool of water at the bottom, and a scatter of brush on a ledge halfway, which would have caught a falling body and then let go of it.

She stood and looked for a long time.

"Here," Rafe said.

He did not point.

He said it quietly, from three steps behind her.

"I was coming down from the Northern gate. I saw something pale on the rocks beside the pool. I thought it was an animal." His voice stayed level. "I climbed down. It took me a while."

"Was she alive?"

"No."

Kerensa turned around.

He was standing very straight, with his hands out of his pockets.

"No pulse," he said. "No breath. She was cold, and her head was split open on one side. I put my hand on her chest and there was nothing."

"And then?"

"I did what I could. I'm not a medic." His throat moved. "I kept my hand there. I talked to her. I said her name. I don't know why. I didn't know her. I'd never heard her voice."
