Chapter 14: The Interview

Kerensa called Ward four times on the drive to the station.

Each call went to voicemail.

"He's not hurt," Rafe said from the driver's seat. "They'd keep him in one piece. He's their witness."

"He's a B-class hunter. Nobody keeps him anywhere."

"His father can."

She put the phone away.

The Carrow station had a gray lobby and a bench bolted to the wall.

Rafe sat on the bench with his coat on.

"I'll be right here," he said. "I'm not going anywhere."

"Good," Kerensa said. "Stand at the door."

His mouth twitched.

"I'll sit at the door."

The interview room had a table, a recorder, and the detective in his gray raincoat.

Rafe's lawyer sat down next to her with a folder, and said nothing yet.

"Miss Haglund," the detective said. "Tell me about Friday the sixth."

"I woke up in a hospital on Saturday night," Kerensa said. "That's the first thing I remember about Friday."

"That's a convenient gap."

"It's a skull fracture. It's in the hospital file you already have."

He turned a page.

"Your sister says you asked her to walk up to the rail, then grabbed her by the arms. She says she twisted free and you fell."

"Which arm?"

He blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

"Which arm did I grab?" Kerensa said. "I'd like to know where the bruise is."

"There's a photograph. A family doctor took it three days later."

"Three days later."

"Yes."

"The same doctor who stitched the cut on her palm after she was cut by a vase in front of two witnesses." Kerensa kept her voice even. "I'm sure he's very thorough."
