Chapter 22: The Wedding

They were married six days later in the guild's training yard, under a white canvas roof, with Lorna's sentencing still a month away.

Kerensa had refused every wedding planner in the city.

"I'm not wearing a hundred layers of tulle," she told Constance. "I'd like to be able to move."

Constance had found her a plain ivory dress with a long skirt and no sleeves.

It left her scarred palm bare.

Two hundred hunters filled the folding chairs.

The Eastern gate team sat in the front row in their dress coats, and the man with the bandaged forearm had cried before the music started.

The press was kept at the gate.

Kerensa did not mind.

Ward walked her down the aisle.

He had shaved, and he held her arm very carefully.

"You don't have to say anything," he said under his breath.

"I wasn't going to."

"I'm going to say something. Later. At the party."

"If it's about the rabbit, don't."

"It's a little about the rabbit."

She laughed, and the whole row looked up.

Rafe stood under the canvas in a black suit and no gray coat.

She had never seen him without it.

He looked younger, and very pale, and his hands were locked behind his back.

Constance sat in the front chair with a hydrangea in her lap.

She was not crying.

Her eyes were bright and her mouth was very still, and when Kerensa passed she reached out and touched the hem of the ivory skirt.

The officiant was the registry council's chair, who had asked to do it.

"The vows," she said, "are your own."

Rafe went first.

"I stood at a door for a week and called it none of my business," he said. "That's the worst thing I ever did. I'll never stand at one again. If you're on the other side of it, I'll be in the room."

He looked at her.

"I knew who you were the first night. I chose you in the corridor of a hospital, before you ever looked at me. I'll choose you every morning after."

A few people in the chairs made soft, unsteady sounds.
