Chapter 4: The Anniversary Gala

The morning after the stairs, every news site in Carrow City ran the same headline.

LOST HEIRESS ATTACKS FATHER AT HOME.

Under it was a photo of Gordon Haglund with his arm in a sling and a quote from "a family friend."

Kerensa read it on the guild's twelfth floor, eating toast.

Rafe stood in her doorway with a garment bag.

"The Haglunds are holding the welcome-home gala tonight," he said. "Seven hundred people. Press at the door. Your father invited you by letter."

"To apologize."

"In front of everyone."

She looked at the garment bag.

"Then I'll need to be dressed for it."

He laid it on her bed and left.

Inside was a plain black dress, long sleeves, a high neck, and nothing she would have to take off to fight in.

She put her phone in the pocket she found in the seam.

The Haglund Foundation ballroom was gold and white, and the whole city was in it.

Kerensa walked in beside Rafe, not on his arm, and the room turned.

Whispers moved ahead of her down the red carpet.

Gordon stood on the stage under a banner that read WELCOME HOME, KERENSA.

His arm was still in its sling, and he smiled for the cameras.

Lorna stood beside him in white, with her right hand wrapped in fresh gauze.

Constance stood at the end of the line, looking at the floor.

Ward stood with the family, in a dark suit, looking at nothing.

Gordon took the microphone.

"We have our daughter back," he said. "We are grateful. She has had a hard life, and she has struggled to adjust. Tonight we ask her to take the first step."

He held out his good hand toward her.
