Chapter 21: Leofric's Fall

I did not take the light out with me.

I took a pitchfork from the rack by the stable door, an ash-handled one with a bent tine.

Then I stepped out into the grey dawn.

Leofric stood in the middle of the courtyard with two hundred of his father's household guard in rows behind him.

He had put on his best cloak.

His splinted wrist was strapped across his chest, and there was a new sword in his left hand.

"The Duke is held by traitors," he called, loud enough to carry.

"As his heir, I take his place. I will have the sorcerer's head, and the beast's, and the girl's."

Behind me the courtyard was filling.

Cooks and grooms and laundresses had come out from the kitchens.

Boys from the stable stood along the wall, thin in their shirtsleeves.

Farm folk from the hall stood among them with soot on their faces.

Four hundred people had seen the relic answer me, and they had not gone home.

"You can't wield a pitchfork against a sword, gate-brat," Leofric said.

He was smiling again.
