Chapter 30: Ohio

Ambrose looked down at the officer from his full height.

"Yes," he said politely. "I imagine it does."

The officer looked at him. Then at the dollhouse in his arms. Then at me.

"He got better," I said.

There were a lot of hours after that. A police station, a lot of coffee, a lot of the same questions.

I'm skipping them. So did we, mostly.

By noon we were climbing the stairs over the laundromat with a dollhouse and a police report.

The laundromat lady came running out from behind the counter when she saw me.

She'd kept my apartment. She'd kept paying nothing and changing nothing and telling the landlord I'd be back.

She hugged me so hard my glasses fogged.

Then she looked up at Ambrose and said, "Oh, he's tall," and went back behind her counter.

My apartment was exactly how I'd left it in August.

Glitter on the kitchen table. A coffee mug with a ring of mold in it. My cardigan over the chair.

My phone was on the counter, dead.

Ambrose stood in the middle of my living room and turned around slowly.

My living room is very small. He made it look like a dollhouse.

"It's warm," he said.

"The dryers. They're right under us. It's like living on a toaster."

He set Gravemoor down on top of my dresser, very gently.

Mouse's face appeared in the attic window, pressed to the glass.

She looked around my bedroom. Then she said, in her tiny window voice, "Small."
