Chapter 5: What He Told Her

Paula's kitchen was the one I had picked out for her.

I had chosen the blue tile and the little round table, and I had hung the yellow curtains myself.

She put the coffees on the counter.

Her hands were shaking.

"Sit," she said.

"I'll stand."

"Then please let me say it all at once."

I leaned against the doorframe with the log folded in my fist.

"Calvin told me you two had been done for years," Paula said. "He said you slept in different rooms and ran the house like business partners."

"We have never slept in different rooms."

"He said you had stopped wanting him." Her eyes filled. "He said you were the one who found this apartment so he'd have somewhere to go. That you signed the lease because you wanted him happy somewhere else."

"And you believed that."

"I wanted to."

"Paula."

"I know." She wiped her cheek. "I know how that sounds."

"Did you ever ask me?"

"No."

"Not once, in fourteen months."

"I was scared you would say it wasn't true."

That, at least, was honest.

I held out my hand.

"Show me what he wrote."

She went to the counter and picked up her phone.

She scrolled for a moment, then gave it to me with her thumb still on the screen.

It was a message from Calvin, sent in February.
